Frequently Asked Questions

  • No - we work with people who are trying to conceive as well as women who are pregnant. We can help decrease pregnancy-related aches and pains, as well as prepare for childbirth.

  • We believe that good Pelvic Health Therapy requires a full hour of hands-on care. You won’t be left waiting in a cold treatment room, or passed off to someone else.

  • Absolutely not. We believe that Pelvic Health is best provided in a specialty clinic, not in the back of a busy ortho gym. Our clinic is designed to provide a calm and cheerful space so that your healing begins the moment you walk in the door.

  • Yes! You will be with the same, highly-trained therapist each visit, and not passed off to an aide to watch you exercise. We use hands-on techniques, both internal and external and won’t just hook you up to a machine to watch you do kegels.

  • Absolutely. Many patients are surprised to learn that their back pain and leakage are related, or that their constipation is contributing to painful sex. Your therapist will perform a head-to-toe exam and provide a clear explanation of why you are experiencing your symptoms. The good news: your treatment plan will improve all of your symptoms at once!

  • Not necessarily. Many doctors are not aware of the Pelvic Health services, nor the benefits. Medical school provides plenty of training on medications and surgery, but minimal (or no) information on the muscles of the pelvic floor. Many of our patients find us themselves after years of endless appointments, imaging, and medications.

  • Never. Physical Therapy can help you strengthen and recover at any stage. Many women are able to stop dashing to the toilet, leaking with sneezes, or pads decades after delivery.

  • Pelvic Health is so much more than kegels! These pelvic floor strengthening exercises may be a part of your treatment plan, but our expert therapists take a whole-body approach to help you find lasting relief from your symptoms. Many people actually need pelvic floor relaxation, or stretching, rather than strengthening.

  • Yes! Many symptoms can “fly under the radar” for years. Even if you feel great, having a check-up for your Pelvic Health is a great idea. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”  This is especially important before beginning impact activities, such as running and weight training. Learning how to care for your “new” pelvic floor can prevent many issues down the road.

  • Absolutely. We have kids along for visits every day! We will always modify our visit for what your little one needs, and often have extra hands on-deck in the front office to assist as well. We know it can be challenging to make appointments for yourself, and we are committed to helping make it work for you!

  • Nope. We treat all adults with Pelvic Health concerns. Some male pelvic health issues include erectile dysfunction, leakage, bowel troubles, abdominal, hip and back pain, penile and testicular pain. We also help individuals across the gender spectrum and those who are transitioning.

  • A referral is not needed, so you can call and schedule your care as soon as you’d like. We prefer to keep your healthcare team in the loop, so may ask for your permission to send notes/updates and coordinate care if needed.

  • Absolutely! While maybe well-intended, both of those responses are not helpful. What is helpful? Determining the cause of the pain, and treating it! Sometimes the pain comes from tight muscles, nerve irritation, or joint pain. Your expert PT will find the root cause, and get you on the path of enjoying your intimate time again.

  • See our “What to Expect” section on our pelvic health page. You are always welcome to bring a partner or other support person. We can also provide a staff chaperone if you would prefer.

  • Your PT is trained in a variety of techniques, and will base your treatment plan on what we uncover in your exam. Treatments may include manual therapy, scar massage, cupping, biofeedback, breath work, strength training, stretching, nerve glides, stretches, or dry needling. Here is an even more detailed list of treatment modalities.

  • If your symptoms are rather simple and came along recently, your goals may be met in 4-6 visits. This is especially true if you are able to do the “homework” between visits. You should begin to notice significant improvement after just 2-3 visits. Some patients deal with uncomfortable symptoms for many years before finding a pelvic health PT. If your symptoms are more complicated, involving chronic pain, heavy medication needs, etc. treatment may require more visits, such as 8-12. Your Therapist is an expert at getting to the root cause of your symptoms, and will get you on track to relief!

  • No problem! Similar to your OBGYN, being on your cycle will not impact your care. We can always modify our session based on your comfort.

  • Yes! We are happy to provide telehealth visits to help you stay on track towards your goals during travel, cold and flu season, or out-of-town clients. We also provide 2-week postnatal telehealth visits to get you on the right road to recovery quickly!
